How I Built Mindful Finance — A Family Finance App — Solo, From Scratch, Using Claude Code
A few weeks ago, I had an idea. Today, that idea is installed on real phones, tracking real money for real families — including mine.
Where It All Started
The idea for Mindful Finance came from a real problem I saw every day in my own home. My family was juggling a patchwork of calendar reminders, WhatsApp notes, and spreadsheets just to stay on top of our finances. EMI due dates were scattered across phone calendars. Insurance renewals were buried in old email threads. SIP contributions were tracked in a shared Excel sheet that nobody remembered to update.
A conversation with close friends — Dhinesh Kumar Kandasamy, Kaviyarasan M, Manoj Kumar, and Jagan R — crystallized it. We talked about how many families face this exact challenge: managing shared expenses, keeping everyone on the same page, and planning ahead — without a single place to do it. That conversation became the spark for Mindful Finance.
Building It Solo with Claude Code
I built this entire app solo — no co-founders, no development team. Just me, VS Code, and Claude Code by Anthropic.
Claude Code acted as my AI-powered development partner throughout the build. It helped me architect the app, write and debug code, think through edge cases, and move fast without sacrificing quality. What would have traditionally taken a small team several months, I was able to accomplish in a couple of weeks — largely because I was not starting from zero at every step. Claude Code reduced the cognitive overhead of solo development significantly, letting me focus on the product vision rather than getting stuck in implementation details.
What Mindful Finance Does
Mindful Finance is a personal finance tracker built specifically for families. Here is what it covers:
Income, Expense, Savings and Investment Tracking — log every financial transaction in one place, categorized and easy to review.
Recurring Commitments Manager — track EMIs, SIPs, insurance premiums, and subscriptions so nothing falls through the cracks.
Smart Bill Reminders — get notified before due dates, not after. No more missed payments or manual calendar entries.
Family Accounts — every member of the family sees the same financial picture. Shared visibility, better decisions.
Biometric Lock — your financial data stays protected with fingerprint or face authentication.
Dark Mode — for late-night finance reviews and early-morning budget checks alike.
Export to Excel — pull out your data whenever you need it, in a format you already know how to use.
The Problem It Solved
The thing I am most proud of is not any single feature — it is what the app replaced. Before Mindful Finance, my family was using a messy combination of tools: calendar reminders for due dates, WhatsApp messages to coordinate expenses, and spreadsheets to get a rough picture of where the money was going. None of these tools talked to each other. Context was always lost.
Now everything is in one place. Every family member has visibility. Bills are tracked automatically. And the mental overhead of managing money as a family has dropped significantly.
What This Milestone Means to Me
Shipping a product solo is a deeply humbling experience. Every design decision, every bug, every user-facing feature — they all come back to you. But it is also incredibly rewarding. This project proved to me that a single motivated developer, armed with the right AI tooling, can build something real and useful in a short amount of time.
The biggest lesson: clarity of purpose beats complexity of features. Mindful Finance does not try to do everything. It tries to do one thing really well — help families take control of their finances without friction.
Thank You
A huge thank you to my better half, Dhinesh Kumar Kandasamy, Kaviyarasan M, Manoj Kumar, and Jagan R — for the conversations that sparked this idea and the early feedback that shaped it. And to Anthropic for building Claude Code, the tool that made this solo build possible.
If you want to try Mindful Finance, drop a comment or reach out directly. I would love to hear from real families who could benefit from it.
